Chapter 11: The Broussard Bank

He came back on Thursday night, and not because I called him.

Bastien called him.

My son had taken my phone off the kitchen counter while I was in the shower, found the number Remy had written on the whitewashed wall in grease pencil, and dialed it.

I came out of the bathroom in a towel to hear him say, to a speakerphone, "Mama's being weird."

"Bastien!" I said.

"She's been staring at the floor of the shed all week," Bastien went on.

"She won't say why.

"There's a footprint."

There was a silence on the line.

"I'm coming," Remy said.

"Don't," I said, from the hall.

"I'll stay on the gravel."

I put my hand over my eyes.

"Fourth term," I said weakly.

"It's after sundown," he said.

"I'm saying it's allowed."

I stood there in my towel with a seven-year-old looking up at me with the face of an angel and the soul of a lawyer.

"Fine," I said.

"Come."

He came, and he stayed on the gravel, and he stood in the bay doorway and looked at the pawprint for a long time.

I had put a plastic tub over it.

He crouched beside the tub and did not lift it.

"It's still warm," he said.

"It's been warm for three days."

"Did it do it on its own?"

"Whatever it is, it was in my chest.
