Chapter 13: Any Sundown

Odalie's POV

We came down the church ladder at one in the morning, and neither of us said a word until we were in the truck.

He did not start the engine.

He sat with both hands on the wheel and his eyes on the dark windshield, and a muscle worked in his jaw.

"Say something," I said.

"I can't," Remy said.

"Why not?"

"Because everything I have is a thing I should have said eight years ago."

He turned his head.

In the dome light his eyes were red-rimmed and his face looked scraped raw.

"Your wolf woke for me," he said.

"That's what he said," I said.

"And I stood there."

"You stood there," I said.

"You were nineteen and you'd been told I was a monster, and you didn't know the wine was poisoned."

"That's not an excuse."

"It isn't," I said.

"It's a fact.

"Both of them are true, and I'm too tired to pick one."

I reached over and took the keys out of the ignition.

He watched me do it and did not stop me.

"What are you doing?" he said.

"Fourth term," I said.

"Any sundown.

"You gave me that, in front of the whole wall."

"It's one in the morning, Odalie," Remy said.

"Then I've got a long wait till the next sundown, and I'd like to say it now."

I put the keys in my lap.

"I'm not saying no," I said.

His whole body went still.

"I'm saying come to the shed."

"Say it again," Remy said.

"Come to the shed, Remy," I said.

He started the truck with the spare key on his own ring.

He did not say anything on the shell road, and he did not say anything on the levee road, and his hand on the gearshift was shaking by the time we passed the cane mill.

I put my own hand over it.

He breathed in through his teeth.

I left it there.

The house was dark when we pulled into the lane.

The neighbor's kitchen light across the field was on, and I knew Bastien was asleep on her couch with the dog, because I had told her I might be late.

I looked at that light for a moment.

I thought, he is safe, and I am allowed to want something.

I got out and walked across the gravel to the shed with the keys in my fist.
