Chapter 10: The Shared Album
On Sunday I drove to Parma and parked in front of the house I had paid for.
It was the first time I had seen it in six weeks.
My mother opened the door before I knocked, in her good cardigan, with flour on her wrist.
"You came," she said, and her face crumpled with relief.
"You said it was just us."
"It is. Your father went to the lodge. Cora's at a friend's with Reed." She pulled me into a hug and held on. "Oh, honey. I've missed you so much."
I stood stiffly in her arms.
It was the first time she had hugged me in a year. I could not remember what I had done to earn the last one.
The kitchen smelled like pot roast and onions.
She had set two places at the table with the blue plates, the ones from when we were little.
"Sit, sit."
I sat.
She served me a thick slice of beef and a mound of potatoes, and then she sat across from me with her hands folded.
"I want to say something first," she said.
"All right."
"I was hard on you. Your father too. We were scared. Cora was so sick, and when you wouldn't..." She stopped. "When it looked like you wouldn't help, we lost our heads."
"Thank you for saying that."
"So now we can all move on."
"Move on how?"
My mother smiled hopefully.
"You'll come home on Sundays. You'll make a nice card for Cora's party. And the house payment..." She spread her hands. "Your father doesn't have to know it was ever missed. I'll tell the bank there was a mix-up."
