Chapter 24: A Whole Year

A year to the week after the gala, my mother stood in Justin's kitchen in two oven mitts.

She told him he had the wrong pan.

"It's the pan I have," Justin said.

"Then it's the wrong pan, honey. Hold the door."

He held the oven door. She slid the pot roast in without a flicker of doubt.

I leaned in the doorway with a glass of wine.

My mother was bossing a kidney specialist around his own kitchen, and he was enjoying it.

It was the fourth Sunday dinner I had allowed.

I had counted them, and so had she.

My father sat at the table with the newspaper, in a plain gray sweater, with the flannel gone from his shoulders.

They rented a two-bedroom over in Lakewood. He drove a secondhand sedan now, and he had stopped saying "the lodge."

"Cosima," he said, and folded the paper. "Sit a minute."

I sat across from him.

He took an envelope from his sweater pocket and slid it over the wood.

"What's this?"

"The last of it."

I opened it.

A cashier's check, made out in his cramped capital letters.

It was the final payment on the fifty thousand, four hundred dollars.

Under the amount he had written the date of my first autopay.

I looked at him.

"You didn't have to finish early," I said.

"I know. I wanted to hand it to you with my own hand."

"Dad."

"Twenty-four months," my father said, his voice rough.

"You never asked me for a dime back. I'm a slow learner, but I did learn it."

"Thank you."

"No." He shook his head. "I'm the one who says that. I've been saying it all year. I'll keep saying it."
