A woman beside the buffet began clapping before I could stand.
Celia smiled at her and left her hand on my shoulder.
"I'm not engaged," I told the breakfast room.
The woman stopped with her hands together.
She looked disappointed enough that I nearly apologized to her.
Instead, I moved my chair away from Celia's hand.
"You've misunderstood," I told my sister.
"Miles and I have had one dinner."
Finlay looked at his uncle, then at the toast in his hand.
"I've only ordered one wedding cake," Finlay said.
"I'm not sharing the little figures."
Pippa pushed his plate farther from the table's edge.
I was grateful to them for giving everybody somewhere else to look.
Miles stayed in his chair and let me finish.
"We're going on another date," I said.
