Chapter 5: A Better Rival

Wesley arrived at the next afternoon's interview carrying two paddles.

One said CORA and the other said MILES.

"The audience votes for the better co-star," he explained.

Miles turned his paddle over.

The back said MILES too.

"So I can't vote for her," he said.

Wesley took it away and asked an assistant for tape.

I sat beside Miles while the host reviewed her questions.

He had rolled his sleeves back, showing his forearms.

I watched him straighten my crooked name card.

I was supposed to find him reassuringly dull.

Instead, I nearly missed the first question.

"Who was always late?" the host asked.

I raised my MILES paddle.

Miles raised his CORA paddle.

Wesley smiled from behind the camera.

"Interesting," the host said.

"Tell us more."

"He was late once," I explained.

"An elderly man fell outside his building."

"Cora was late because I called her to help," Miles added.

Wesley's smile settled into a thin line.

The host tried a different question.

"Who made more mistakes?"

I raised my own name.

Miles lifted his.

"Counting mine took her mind off hers," he said.

"He counts the ones where somebody walks through the wrong door," I told her.

"They're still mistakes," he replied.

I remembered him entering a cupboard during a serious scene.

The host laughed before I could explain it.

Wesley made a small rolling gesture with both hands.
