Chapter 9: The Small Room

Cora's POV

Sadie's venue was above a shop that sold elaborate dog clothing.

Miles stopped at the window beside a tiny velvet dinner jacket.

"Wesley finally found your size," I told him.

He looked at the empty sleeve, then at me.

"You'd still have to stand in front," he said.

I wanted to kiss him on the pavement.

Instead, I took his hand and led him upstairs.

The room held thirty chairs and one very small table.

Sadie was arranging a microphone stand near the little stage.

She saw us, smiled, and pointed toward the seats.

"Two ordinary guests," I said.

"Then you know what to do," she answered.

I chose the back row to avoid attracting attention.

Miles's knees reached the chair in front before he sat down.

He turned sideways.

The chair turned with him and trapped his sleeve under its back.

I helped free the cardigan without laughing loudly enough to distract Sadie.

A woman waiting beside the aisle watched our progress.

"You could take the end seats," she suggested.

We moved, carrying our coats in front of our faces.

That attracted considerably more attention than simply walking would have.

Miles put his coat down and sat with his knees in the aisle.

I settled beside him and exhaled.

The woman approached again.

"Could you move your foot?" she asked him.

He moved both feet neatly under his chair.

She bent to plug a lamp into the socket he'd covered.

We had achieved unobtrusiveness by threatening the entire lighting arrangement.
