Chapter 23: The Record Reaches Its Witness
Kestrel set his bloodstained travel gloves beside the Council arbiter's chair and said, 'I will answer only the questions Wynn wants answered.'
The arbiter's clerk reached for the gloves. Kestrel caught his wrist before his fingers touched the leather.
'You may examine them after the evidence is secured,' Kestrel said. 'Until then, you will leave them where I placed them.'
The clerk looked toward the arbiter.
The arbiter nodded once. 'Leave them.'
Kestrel released him and came to stand beside me. His coat was still dusted with snow from the pass. One sleeve had dried dark at the cuff where he had used his own glove to bind a split in his palm.
He had given the bloodied pair to the Council before removing his coat.
That was his version of an introduction.
The chamber sat beneath the old archive, cut into the mountain and heated by iron braziers. Three Council witnesses occupied the far bench. The High Council arbiter sat alone behind a narrow table, with no Alpha's banner above him and no guard at his shoulder.
Corvin stood opposite us in a dark riding coat, two of his men behind him. He had arrived before the doors closed. He had also arrived without the expression of a man expecting to lose.
'Wynn Sablewood,' the arbiter said. 'Bring the packet forward.'
I carried Tomas's sealed leather packet to the table. I did not look at Corvin while I placed it before the arbiter.
His attention went to my hands anyway.
'You understand that opening a sealed delivery before its intended authority may constitute interference with Council property?' he asked.
'I did not open it.'
'Who did?'
'Tomas Vey sealed it at the east spring station. He gave it to me in the kennel yard. The mark is his. The wax is unbroken.'
