Chapter 15: Santa Grazi
We rode into Santa Grazi on the fourth day after the hut, in a thin cold rain.
Three tied men walked behind the Bear's riders, and the whole village stood at its doors.
I had been told it was a small place.
It was a chapel, an inn, a forge, a row of grey houses with their shutters pulled, and the oak.
I had not been told about the oak.
It stood in a meadow below the chapel wall, wider than the church was long.
It was bare still and black with rain, with a ring of flat stones set round its roots.
Nobody had to tell me what the stones were for.
A hundred men could sit on them, and had, for four hundred years.
"That is where you stand," Aitor said behind me.
I looked at it for a long time.
Then I looked at the people watching us, and I put my shoulders back.
I rode in my own clothes.
I had left the skirt at the fortress and brought only my brother's coat and trousers.
They were warm, and I would not put on a skirt to be looked at by people who had decided what I was.
My head was bare.
Amaia rode before me on the black mare, in the cook's girl's shawl, with her braid tight and her chin up.
I had told her to look at no one, and she looked at everyone.
The whispering began at the forge.
"That is the Etxeberria girl," said a woman to her neighbour.
"The Bear's," said the neighbour.
"With her hair cut off, look," said a man in the forge door.
"The uncle said," said another.
A woman pulled a child in from the door.
