Aitor's POV

The young Urrutia would not sit.

He stood in the tap room of the inn with his hat in his hand.

He was a lean dark man of perhaps thirty, with a clean shaven jaw and a Roncal coat of good brown cloth.

He looked at me as a man looks at a house he has been told is his.

I had last seen an Urrutia face to face at twenty-one, over my father's body.

I had not spoken to one since.

Itziar stood at my shoulder, dressed, with her hair damp and her chin up.

She had said she would be there.

I had not argued.

"My father is at the chapel," the young man said.

"He rode in at midnight.

"He does not leave the Roncal side for less than a death.

"He sent me to say what he will not say in front of a hundred men."

"Say it," I said.

"The Larreas have been kept from the oak for twenty years.

"My father did not write that law.

"His father did, after your father shot mine at the ford."

"Your father's father came across the river with a dozen men," I said.

"Say it as it was."

"I am saying it as the valleys say it."

He turned his hat once in his hands.

"Both our houses have been foolish.

"He has watched this feud eat his sons.

"He is willing to let it end."

I waited.

"He will let you ride into the ring tomorrow," the young man said.

"You may stand under the oak with the girl and say what you like.
