Chapter 8: The Abbot's Bed
I went up the stone stairs on the second night after, alone, with no cap and no coat, and I knocked on his door.
I did not wait for an answer.
The fire was banked low and the room was gold with it.
He stood at the table with his back to me and his sleeves rolled to the elbow, and he turned slowly when the latch dropped.
He had been expecting it.
I saw that in the way his hands closed, once, at his sides, and opened again.
"You came," said the Bear.
"I said I would decide.
"I decided."
I shut the door and put my back against it.
"Come here," I said.
He crossed the room.
He stopped in front of me, close enough that the heat of him reached through my shirt.
His hands stayed at his sides.
"Say what you want," he said.
"Take off my shirt."
He lifted his hands.
They shook, and he knew they did, and he did not hide it.
He found the hem of my linen and drew it up over my ribs and my head, very carefully, and dropped it on the floor.
Under it I wore the strip of binding cloth.
He unwound it.
He did it slowly, one turn at a time, as if it were a wound he was dressing, and the cloth fell away and my skin came out into the warm air.
I stood in front of him with my arms at my sides, bare to the waist.
He looked.
He looked for a long time.
I had thought I would be ashamed of my narrow shoulders and my sun-browned arms.
I had thought I would be ashamed of the white breasts no one had ever seen.
I was not.
His face had gone open and stunned, and his eyes were black.
"You're beautiful," said the Bear.
His voice cracked on it.
"I have wanted to see you since the yard."
"Touch me."
He touched me.
His hands came up and cupped me, the whole weight of each breast in a broad, hot palm.
His thumbs passed across my nipples.
My head fell back against the door.
