Chapter 13: The Terms
I held her hand and didn't say anything for a while.
The monitor over her head beeped, steady and unbothered.
"Say it again," I said.
"I've known since April."
"You knew." My voice came out flat. "You sat at that table and watched Dad tell me I was selfish."
"Yes."
"You let Mom put my face on a banner."
"I did."
She didn't look away, and that was the worst part.
"A specialist at the university hospital told me in April," she said. "Autoimmune, like Grandpa's. Bad numbers, no cure, a list for a donor who dies in a car crash on the right day."
"Why didn't you tell us?"
"I tried to tell Dad. Sort of."
I waited.
"One Sunday in May I asked him a question at dinner. I said, what if one of your kids needed a piece of liver and the other was the only match?"
"What did he say?"
"He said God would never ask that of this family, and he asked Mom to pass the rolls."
She laughed, short and dry.
"Mom said I should stop reading sad stories online."
I let go of her hand and pressed mine against my eyes.
"So you knew they wouldn't answer," I said.
"I knew they'd never been asked. Not really. Then the clinic mailed the wrong report, and they got asked anyway."
Her fingers plucked at the blanket.
"I watched them, Shanna. Dad said it before Mom did. Nobody cuts open my baby. They had a dying daughter on paper and a healthy one in the room, and they picked me without a second's thought."
