Chapter 17: Good Standing

The family's lawyer had a conference room on the ninth floor with a long walnut table and a view of the water tower.

We all sat down at nine on Monday.

My mother took the chair at the head of the table, and the lawyer sat at her elbow with a silver pen.

Chloe sat beside my mother in white, with her hands folded.

Clark and Eli sat on the far side. My father sat at the end with his hand flat on the table.

I sat across from my mother, and Caleb took the chair behind my shoulder.

"We are here under the terms of the late Mr. Weatherford's trust," the lawyer said.

"We know why we're here," I said.

"Then I'll be brief. The trustee has prepared a letter for Miss Weatherford's signature."

He slid a single page across the walnut.

I read it twice.

It said that I had left the family home of my own free will.

It said that I had never been prevented from returning, that no one had hidden anything from me, and that I regretted the distress I had caused my sister.

It said that I was, in the trustee's judgment, a young woman in good standing.

At the bottom was a line for my name.

"This is a confession," I said.

"It's a courtesy," my mother said. "Sign it and the holdings are yours on Friday. You will live as you wish, and Chloe will be cared for."

"You want me to say nobody hid anything."

"I want you to say it's over."
