Chapter 13: Alive
"Take it how?" Corvus said.
"In daylight," Seren said. "With him walking in front of us."
He nodded at the captain of the king's guard, on his knees in the middle of the floor.
The captain had heard every word.
His face was grey, drained of all hope.
At first light Seren stood at the window with the captain beside him and a household man's sword at the captain's back.
Below, the black knights were saddled.
Up on the scree, the Caerwen archers had their bows strung.
"Come down and get him," Seren called. "He's very tired. He'd like to go home."
Nobody answered.
The Caerwen archers broke first.
They went up over the ridge in twos and threes, and then all at once, without looking back at the road.
They'd done the sum Seren gave them in the dark.
If the captain died on their arrows, Varra would blame them, and their regent would hang them to prove it.
The black knights sat their horses a while longer.
Then their lieutenant turned his horse downhill, and the rest followed him at a walk.
Corvus watched them go with his jaw clenched so hard Seren heard his teeth.
