Gold light still held in the obsidian seams of Durn's ceiling, thin and bright where the flare had burned the stone.
Ondel's prayer book lay open on the table beneath it.
The red-lacquered tickets inside it were the ones from the night of the succession ceremony.
The night Ondel swore he had been praying alone.
Aquas unrolled the southern approach map and set the corners flat with his palms.
The parchment still smelled of the vault.
'There is a shelf pass above the third watchtower,' he said. 'Durn's captains marked it collapsed.'
He tapped the faded line.
'The ash buried the mouth. Not the road.'
Carrion leaned in over the map.
His signet ring caught the forge light.
'You are offering Saturn a road,' he said.
'I am offering you the pass,' Aquas said. 'It is the safer one.'
Temik stepped to the table.
