Chapter 26: The Road He Cannot Close
The Moon King stood in the middle of the southern road with his crown on and forty riders at his back.
He had come to make Aquas's husband turn around.
Aquas took Lucien's hand. The uninjured one.
He did it before the King opened his mouth, so the whole road could see which of them he had chosen.
Lucien's grip closed on his. The shoulder was still wrapped from the arrow, and he had not complained once on the walk out of the gate.
The King stepped across the road and raised the moon banner.
Silver cloth, black crescent, the same standard that had hung over the hall where Aquas was drugged.
'This is the last kindness I will offer you,' the King said.
'I am listening,' Aquas said.
He planted the pole in the road between them.
'Ride under my banner,' he said. 'My riders will see you to the sun temple and no one will touch you.'
