Durn set her travel-worn map case down on the ash beside Aquas.
'Pluto's southern wall is thin because I am standing here,' she said.
Behind her, forty of the forge crew stood strung along the ridge with their hammers still on their backs.
Aquas had not sent for them.
He counted them without meaning to, the way he counted everything since the shelter, and the count came out at forty, and every one of them was a body that should have been standing on a wall.
Durn crouched and opened the case and spread the ash-road map flat on the ground between them.
She put her finger on the border gate at the top of the sheet.
'I pulled the gate crew off the southern defenses,' she said. 'Nine years, that wall has not been this thin.'
Aquas looked at the map.
