Chapter 6: The Only Paper
Rosalie was the first one out, with her arms already open.
"Sue! Look at you, you must be exhausted. Desmond said you've been here since Tuesday."
She hugged me hard, and she smelled of expensive vanilla.
I stood in it and said nothing.
Kenzie came around the car next, in a white sundress and a bright, nervous smile.
"Aunt Sue! Oh my gosh, it looks amazing."
She hadn't looked at the porch yet.
Behind her walked a silent broad man in a canvas jacket, with his hands in his pockets.
Carl looked at the roofline, then the windows, then the deck.
He didn't look at me at all.
The gray station wagon let out a tall woman in linen and a stooped man holding a camera bag of his own.
"These are Kenzie's fiancé's parents," Rosalie said. "Everyone, this is Sue, who has done all the work."
The mother-in-law took my hand.
"Desmond has told us so much about the family place," she said. "Four generations?"
"Three," Desmond said quickly.
"Three," I said. "On my mother's side."
I let go of her hand.
She blinked.
"Welcome," I said, loud enough for the road to hear. "I'm glad you came early, because I'd like to introduce myself properly."
Desmond stepped forward.
"Sue, not now. Let's get everyone a drink."
"My name is Susannah Torrey," I said. "I'm Kenzie's stepmother. This is my mother's cottage, and I inherited it. The deed has my name on it and nobody else's."
The photographer had come early too, in the green sedan, and he was lifting a long lens.
He stopped with it halfway up.
The mother-in-law turned to Desmond.
