Chapter 4: The Casserole

Bridget came home at six with a lasagna in a foil pan and her curls piled on top of her head.

"I made your favorite," she announced, kicking the door shut. "Don't say anything. You've been weird since Sunday."

She set the pan on the stove and turned around with her hands on her hips, the way she always did when she wanted me to laugh.

I laughed.

That was the worst part.

Three years of living with Bridget had worn a groove in me, and my face still knew what to do.

"Weird how?" I said.

"You went to your mom's. Without a warning. Without me." She put a hand over her heart. "I'm not hurt. I'm a little hurt."

"I'm sorry."

"You'd better be." She hugged me hard from the side and her chin dug into my shoulder. "I'm proud of you, though. Family's important."

I hugged her back and counted to three.

On the roof she had held my hand and told me it would be quick.

I did not know what to do with the fact that she still smelled like vanilla and that I still wanted to tell her everything.

We ate on the couch with the TV off.

She told me about a woman at her dental office who had put a live hermit crab in the waiting room fish tank, and she did the voice, and I laughed twice more.

It would have been easy to forget.

I put my fork down.

"I had the strangest dream last night," I said.

"Yeah?" Bridget licked sauce off her thumb. "Tell me."
