Chapter 17: The Stone Answers

On the fourth day, Pinewatch hall held every Alpha in the nation.

I recognized nine packs by their pins before I stopped.

Wolves stood against the walls and on the stairs to the gallery, and the doors were propped open so the courtyard could hear.

The Founding Stone sat in the center on its dais, grey and waist-high.

The Founder's blade stood in it to the hilt.

I had walked past that blade every day of my life and never been allowed to touch it.

Corwin stood on my left in his black coat.

Garrick stood on my right, and Odette held my hand.

My father sat on the dais beside my mother, and he did not look at me.

The Council envoy rapped his staff on the floor.

"This Gathering has been called on the petition of the Luna of Pinewatch," he said. "She asks that the Founding Stone be tested before every pack, with her daughter Odette."

"Let the heir come forward," my mother said.

Her voice was warm and calm and carried to the back of the room.

"The Moon Elder is ill and cannot attend," she went on. "So I name the registry clerk to witness the Stone's answer."

The thin clerk stood up at her side.

He was gray in the face and would not look at anyone.

Odette let go of my hand.

"I'm sorry," she whispered. "Whatever happens."

"It's all right," I said. "Just do it."

She walked up to the Stone with her chin up and her hands trembling.
