Chapter 19: Earn It

"Choose what, Miss Hallam?" the envoy asked.

The hall waited on my answer.

"Whether I marry, and whom," I said. "I'll tell the Council myself, in Highmere, before the month ends. Not here, and not with my mother's chair still warm."

The envoy bowed his head.

"The Council will hear you at its door," he said. "Within the month."

The benches broke into noise.

Alphas crowded the dais to look at the blade, and pack elders reached for my hand, and a woman I did not know wept openly.

I gave the Founder's blade to my father to hold for a moment.

It was the only thing I could think of that was fair.

He took it in both hands.

When I turned to find Corwin, the back of the hall was empty.

I did not have time to think about that.

Garrick caught me at the foot of the dais.

He had taken off his coat.

"I need to do this in front of everyone," he said. "Please."

He walked out into the middle of the floor, under the lamps, and the noise died away.

"I'm Garrick Hallam," he said. "Son of the Alpha. I was offered a posting at Silvermoon, which I wanted for three years."

He took a folded letter from his pocket and tore it in half.

"I'm withdrawing. I'm staying home."

A murmur ran round the benches.

Garrick went down on one knee, in front of every Alpha, and bowed his head.

"Katja Hallam is the firstborn of this pack," he said. "I swear my wolf to her. I'll do whatever she asks, for as long as she asks it."

I stood over him.

I could have let him stay there for a very long time, and nobody would have said I was wrong.
