Chapter 21: I Choose You

Katja's POV

I had driven all night and rehearsed a speech the whole way.

When I saw him standing by the table with his pin gone and ash on his cuff, I forgot every word.

The chamber looked at me.

Nine Alphas, thirty seats, and a gallery that had gone silent.

"Katja," Corwin said. His voice cracked on it.

"You left a note," I said, walking down the room. "You wrote, I won't be the reason."

"I meant it."

"I know you did. That's why I'm here."

I stopped in front of the Council chair and put both hands on the table.

"Honored Chair, I answer the Council," I said. "You told me the treaty binds the heir to Blackthorn. I am the heir, and it is mine to answer."

"Go on," the chair said.

"I void it."

A shock went down the table.

"I don't need a clause to enforce," I said. "I don't want a bargain my father signed over my head before I could walk. Write it down: the treaty ends today, by my hand."

I took the pen from the chair's blotter and signed the paper they pushed toward me, the one I had just dictated.

Then I turned around.

"And now I'm asking him for himself," I said. "Corwin Strake. I choose you. No treaty, no Council, no rank. If you'll have me, I'll be yours."

He didn't speak.

His gray eyes were wet, and he did not try to hide it.

"I burned the order," he said hoarsely. "I gave up the seat."

"I heard from the guards on the way in."

"I'd have waited."

"I know," I said. "I'm done making you."

He crossed the floor.

He took my face in both hands in front of nine Alphas and a hundred witnesses and kissed me.

The gallery came apart in noise.

I did not hear any of it.
