Chapter 17: The Ally
Mama had put Blythe in the good chair, with a quilt over her knees and a cup of tea she wasn't drinking.
I stood in the kitchen door in my wrinkled dress, with Gaspard's jacket around my shoulders, and I did not go in.
"You have a nerve," I said.
"I know."
"You're sitting in my mother's house in my mother's chair."
"She told me to." Blythe looked at Mama. "I tried to stand up. She said if I stood up she'd sit me down herself."
"I did," said Mama.
She was at the stove, stirring a pot with her back to the room, and she had not turned around once.
"I don't want anything from you," Blythe said. "I know I don't have the right to ask. I came because there's nobody else."
"Where's Auguste?"
"Asleep."
"In the house."
"He doesn't know I left."
She pressed a wad of tissue to her nose.
"I took a cab and a driver who wouldn't stop talking about the Saints."
"I didn't know where else to go."
"I found the address in the Christmas card list in your handwriting."
"What do you want?"
"I want to tell you what I heard."
Gaspard shut the back door, and the room went quiet.
"On Tuesday night," Blythe said, "Hortense had a dinner in the house."
