Chapter 24: Green Light

He had the stove lit before I got my coat off.

The cottage smelled of woodsmoke and clean cotton.

A jar of late dahlias stood on the sill, and I knew he had put them there that afternoon.

"You kept the key," I said.

"You kept the note."

"I wrote the note."

"I read it forty times."

I crossed the room and kissed him.

It was a slow kiss, and the first place it went wrong was my knees.

He caught me by the waist. He turned us both, and my back met the cottage door with a soft thud.

"Say it," he said against my mouth.

"The roof."

"And?"

"Everything else."

He lifted me by the backs of my thighs, and I wrapped my legs around his hips and my arms around his neck.

"Tell me what you want, Cat. All of it. I'm not guessing tonight."

"I want your mouth here."

I tipped my head back and pushed my fingers into his hair.

He put his mouth on the soft place under my ear.

He kissed down my throat to the neck of my dress.

He bit the strap and pulled it off my shoulder with his teeth.

I laughed, breathless.

"My dress is zipped in the back."

"I know where the zipper is."

He set me down on my feet and turned me to face the door.

He drew the zipper down so slowly that I felt every tooth let go.

The dress dropped to the floor around my ankles.

His hands came around me and cupped my breasts, and he pressed his chest against my back.

"God, I missed you this week."

"You saw me on Monday."

"You didn't touch me on Monday."

I leaned into him. His cock was hard against the small of my back through his trousers.
