Chapter 22: The Trustees

Noah's truck pulled up under the live oaks a minute and a half later.

The news vans turned their cameras on it, hoping for Damon.

The night supervisor climbed out of the passenger side in a T-shirt, pale and determined, holding his phone in both hands.

He came up the porch steps and held out the phone.

"Mr. Halberd called it a thank-you gift," he said. "I took the picture because my mom told me to start taking pictures."

"Your mother's a smart woman," Vanessa said behind me.

He went red to the ears.

"Which trustee?" I asked.

"The independent one," Noah said. "The one the board appoints. Your mother appointed him in January."

Vanessa took the phone and looked at the man in the blue bathrobe for a long moment.

"He came to my engagement party," she said.

The union hall was a cinder-block building on the other side of the island, with a flag out front and a kitchen that smelled like fried catfish.

By two o'clock on Sunday there was no room left to stand.

Housekeepers in church clothes. Cooks in shorts. Bellmen holding babies.

The dishwasher had brought his grandkids, and the torn page with gumbo on it, in a frame.

At the front, under a banner for the hotel workers' local, five trustees sat at a folding table with a pitcher of water and five microphones.
