Chapter 10: Until Monday

"I don't know what operation," I said.

"I know you don't." Kate took the phone out of my hand and turned it off. "Tonight you can't do anything about it."

"Kate."

"Tonight you're coming upstairs with me, and your phone stays in my bag."

She hailed a cab with one raised hand.

We did not talk in the back seat.

Her knee pressed against mine the whole ride, and my pulse beat under every inch of my skin.

Her apartment was on the top floor of an old yellow building, with a narrow stairwell and a door that stuck.

She shouldered it open and pulled me in by the front of my shirt.

The door slammed behind us.

Then her mouth was on mine.

It was not careful. She kissed me hard, with her hands fisted in my collar.

I kissed her back.

I had been waiting since the arrivals hall.

"You're my employee," she said against my lips.

"You're my boss."

"I'm your boss until Monday."

"It's Friday."

"Then shut up and take your shirt off."

I got the buttons undone with one bandaged hand and one good one. She shoved the shirt off my shoulders and laid her palms flat on my chest.

Her hands were warm now.

She walked me backward through the dark apartment until my knees hit the edge of her bed.

"Sit."

I sat.

She stood over me, reached behind her, and unzipped the green dress. It slid down her body and pooled on the floor.

She wore nothing under it but a black thong and a pair of heels.

I stopped breathing.

"Look all you want," she said.

"I am."

"Good." She stepped out of the heels. "Now touch me."

I put my hands on her hips and pulled her down onto my lap, her knees on either side of me, and kissed the hollow of her throat.

She tipped her head back with a sound I wanted to hear again.
