Chapter 13: Trevor Says No

Hannah called at three, from the family room of the dialysis ward.

"Mom's on a plane," she said. "Her taxi went straight to the airport. I watched the tracker."

"Is Trevor awake?"

"He's been awake since six. He's waiting."

The screen shook, then steadied on room 412.

Trevor sat propped against two pillows with the line in his arm and his phone held close to his face.

He looked gray under the hospital lights.

"Hey," he said.

"Hey."

Kate stood behind my chair, out of the frame, with one hand on the back of it.

"Hannah told me she has something for me to read," Trevor said. "She wouldn't say what. She said you'd explain."

"I'm not going to explain it first. Read it."

Hannah took her phone back and held it over his tray table. She scrolled through the photos one at a time.

I watched my brother read the lab report.

I watched him read his own name under mine.

He did not say anything for the first two pages.

On the third he started shaking his head, slowly.

"This isn't right," he said.

"It's her handwriting."

"She said you were tested for me last month because you wanted to. She said you volunteered."

"She said that to you?"

"She said it to everyone. She said you were being a hero about it." His voice cracked. "Miles, she told me you were scared and you didn't want me to know."

"I never got tested for you. I got an annual physical."

Trevor read the lined page, the one with the dates.

He read it twice.

When he got to the line about Brooke, his mouth moved without any sound.

"She sat Brooke next to me on purpose," he said.

"Yes."

"So you'd be alone."

"Yes."

"So you'd say yes." He pressed the back of his hand against his mouth. "I stood up there and let them clap. I let her put her arm around me."
