Chapter 15: What I Kept

Kate's POV

Howard did not waste words on a Sunday.

"The board chair got a letter," he said on the speaker. "From a law firm in Columbus."

I stood in my own office with my blouse buttoned wrong and Miles's cologne still on my skin.

"What does it say?"

"That Miles is under investigation for fraud. That Summit is exposed if we keep him on payroll."

"By whom?"

"His mother's lawyer. It's dated Friday."

Friday, when I'd had him against my front door.

I looked across at Miles, who was standing by the window with his hands in his pockets, listening to every word.

"Is it true?" Howard said.

"No," Miles said.

"Then I'll tell the chair that we're reviewing it. Bring me the proof by Monday afternoon."

"We will," I said.

He hung up.

Miles didn't turn around.

"I'll resign," he said to the glass. "If it protects the company, I'll write the letter now."

"You will not."

"Kate."

"I said what I said in my first week. Quit to my face." I crossed the carpet and stood next to him. "This isn't my face."

His mouth moved, almost a smile.

I wanted to put my forehead against his back and stay there.

I didn't.

I had a speech for this, and I'd given it to myself in bad moods for years.

Everyone goes back.

My father went back to my mother four times after he swore he wouldn't. My last boyfriend went back to his ex-wife after calling her a monster. People say a door is closed and then they hold it open for the person who broke it.
