Kate's POV

I had decided to hate her before I even saw her face.

She was sitting on the stone steps of his building with a small suitcase between her feet, in a pale coat that cost too much for the weather.

She stood when she saw Miles get out of my car.

I stayed in the driver's seat, with the window down and my hands on the wheel.

She was pretty. That was the first thing I resented.

She was also shaking, and that was the second.

"Miles," she said. "I'm so sorry. I didn't know where else to go."

"How did you find my address?"

"Hannah. She said you'd want to know. She said I should come before your mother does."

"Before my mother does what?"

"Come here."

I got out of the car.

Miles looked back at me, and I saw a question in his face I did not answer.

"I'll wait in the lobby," I said.

"You can stay," Miles said.

"I'm not your friend. I'm your boss."

"It's nine at night. You're my ride."

That almost worked on me.

We went in together, the three of us, and sat on the cold marble bench under the stairs.

Brooke folded her hands in her lap.

"I wasn't honest with you at your door," she said. "I told you I didn't know what your mother was planning. That wasn't true. I know part of it."

Miles said nothing.

"Last month she took me to lunch. She said Trevor might not have long. She said you were the only person who could save him, and that if you knew, you'd say yes in a heartbeat."

"Say yes to what?"

"She wouldn't say. She said she'd handle it, and I should keep you calm and close, and not let you leave Ohio."
