Chapter 4: Her Rules

On the fifth night, Tiernan knocked on the carriage house door with a Bureau pad under his arm.

"Your log," he said. "I need your signature under wishes one and two."

I signed on the back of his tablet case.

He didn't leave.

"The envelope in the bin," I said. "You told me where to look."

"I did."

"Why?"

"I don't know," he said, and he looked honestly annoyed about it. "I shouldn't have."

"Then I have a rule." I handed him the pen. "You witness. You never grant. You write down what they say yes to and you don't say yes to anything yourself."

"That's the job."

"I know it's the job. I'm saying it's the rule."

He studied me for a moment, and one corner of his mouth moved.

"Seren Fairclough, the only claimant in Maine who negotiates with the clerk."

"I'm the only claimant in Maine who's dying in the same hundred days as the girl getting all the cake."

The corner of his mouth went flat again.

"Rule accepted," he said.

The family dinner was at seven.

My mother had set my place beside Cora's, as the wish required.

My father said grace, which he did not usually do, and for a minute it was almost a normal kitchen.

Then Cora pushed back her chair.

"Wish six," she said. "After dinner, Seren plays the piano with me. A duet. Just the easy one."

"I can't play," I said.

"I'll teach you in ten minutes."
