Chapter 15: Without the Pull

Cadoc's POV

I remember the lane, and the rain on the umbrella, and a child's biscuit going soft in my fist.

Then the hum went out of me.

I had not known it was there.

For twenty-four years I had thought the Hollow was an ache, a thing I carried.

I learned in a single breath that there had been a note under it, thin and steady, holding the whole structure up.

Now the note stopped.

The black went up my arm in one rush.

I heard Dafydd shout, and I felt my knees go.

Then I was lying in mud with the sky coming down on me.

I could not feel her.

That was the worst of it.

I had felt her for three days at the end of a thirty-pace rope, through a green door, through a wall.

Now there was nothing at the end.

Then a pair of hands took my face, hard, and I smelled flour and rain.

"Cadoc," said Bronwen. "Look at me."

I looked.

Her face was above mine, wet and white, and her eyes were enormous.

"The tincture," she said. "It's the tincture, it silences it. It'll wear off by morning. Can you hear me?"

"Yes."

"It won't help if I touch you. I know. Dafydd, help me carry him."

She said the next thing in a low voice, so that only I could hear.

"I'm sorry. I'm so sorry. I had to know."

Between them they got me over the threshold into a small bright kitchen that smelled of toast.
