Chapter 24: The Long Table
A year to the night after the glass, I carried the bread out into the great hall myself.
Sioned walked ahead of me with her longest rolling pin held up in front of her.
"Make way," she told the hall. "Make way for the loaves."
Three hundred wolves made way.
They sat at the long tables in their good coats.
This time every kitchen girl in the keep was sitting among them, with a plate in front of her and a cup of her own.
Sioned had insisted.
She had told the Council it was the law now, and nobody had liked to ask which law.
I set the first basket in front of the Row children.
They had been seated on the dais steps with their legs hanging.
The smallest one, the one with the biscuit, took two rolls at once.
"One each," I said.
"I'm saving it for the potato man."
"The potato man has his own."
The nephew was at the far end of the hall, in a groom's jacket, hauling a tray of dishes.
He had been mucking out the stables since spring.
He nodded to me, carefully, and I nodded back.
I did not forgive him, and he did not ask me to.
