They Hid My Fated Mate, So I Left With the Rival Alpha novel · Chapter 15 of 24

Chapter 15: Not in Front of Them

Ronan's POV

The cup sat in front of her, and the steam rose off it in a thin white thread.

I smelled chamomile.

Under the chamomile I smelled something bitter and green, faint enough that no other wolf in the hall would catch it.

I knew it from the dried leaf in the steward's tin.

My wolf did not ask permission.

I was moving before I knew I had moved, and my hand was already on the table edge to vault it.

The elder looked up at me.

He was smiling.

He had expected this.

I saw it in his eyes in the half second before I reached him: he wanted the Alpha of Blood Moon to tear his great-uncle's throat out in front of two hundred wolves, over a cup of tea no one could yet prove was poison.

He wanted a madman at the head of the pack.

He wanted a Luna who made her mate lose his mind.

Then Hazel stepped into my path.

She did it the way she did everything, without asking, with her chin up.

She put her whole body against the front of mine, from chest to hip, and laid both palms flat on my ribs.

My wolf stopped where it stood.

"Ronan," she said, too softly for anyone else to hear.

"Move."

"No."

"Hazel, he is trying to kill you."

"I know. Look at me."

I looked.

Her eyes were hazel and clear and a little angry, and there was flour in the hair above her ear.

"If you break his neck here, he wins," she said. "He gets his trial, his story, and a dead elder with a mad Alpha standing over him."

"I don't care."

"You will. Tomorrow you will care a great deal."
