Chapter 8: Your Rule, Alpha

Hazel's POV

He opened the door before my knuckles left the wood.

He still had his boots on.

"You told me to lock mine," I said. "It was a very good lock. It didn't help."

"Hazel, go back to bed."

"That's what you said last time, Alpha."

"I meant it last time."

"Then say it like you mean it now."

He didn't say it.

He stood in the doorway with one hand gripping the frame so hard the wood creaked.

I stepped inside, close enough to see the pulse in his throat, and looked up.

"Your rule," I said. "Three rules, and you broke the first one in front of a hundred wolves and the second one at my sink. I'm just keeping count."

"Mine was a kiss."

"Yours was a kiss that stopped," I said. "I'd like to see you finish one."

His eyes went gold.

For a moment I thought he would send me away again.

Then he reached past me and shut the door, and the latch clicked.

He turned me by the hips and walked me back against the wood.

He kissed me hard.

It was hot and deep.

I opened my mouth under his and dragged him in by the front of his shirt.

His beard scraped my chin.

His hand slid under my sleep shirt and spread across my bare back.

He made a low sound in his chest that I felt through my ribs.

"I don't want this," he said against my mouth.

"Liar."

"I don't want what it does."

"Then stop," I said, and bit his lower lip, and felt his whole body jerk against mine.

He lifted me.

My legs went around his waist.

He carried me to the bed and put me down in the middle of it.

He pulled off his shirt and dropped it on the floor.

I had seen his chest on the night he opened the door, and it was worse close up.

Heavy shoulders, dark hair, the long scar under his ribs, and a body that looked built for work and not for show.

I sat up and put my mouth on the scar.
