Chapter 13: The Third Row

Hallie's POV

I had been sitting in the third row of the log flume for most of the afternoon when my father called.

The ride was running empty.

The operator, a teenager in a yellow poncho, had stopped asking if I wanted to go again.

"Hal," my father said. His voice was low and careful. "Trent is in my driveway."

"Don't open the door."

"He has a man with him. A lawyer, I think. He's holding a thick folder."

"Then let him stand there."

"He's ringing the bell. He told me through the glass that he's worried about you."

I looked at the empty seats in front of me.

Row one. Row two.

"What does he say he's worried about?"

"Your judgment." My father coughed. "He wants to talk about who should be running the company while you get some rest."

I almost laughed.

I had run that company beside my father since I was twenty-four.

Trent had run a regional office there for three years, and he had never once brought up my judgment when it was signing his checks.

I had followed my husband to Pinewater eight days ago because his calendar said conference.

Nobody holds a conference at a water park.

I parked in the far lot and followed him through the gate at a distance.

I had a phone, a gray jacket and a plan to film him with whoever he had come with.

I did not have a plan for the front row.

He sat there with three women, and not one of them looked back at the man behind her.
