Chapter 20: Carrots

Hallie's POV

My father asked me one question on the drive home from the breakfast.

"Is he worth the mess?"

I told him that wasn't a thing I got to decide, and he said that was the right answer.

On Saturday afternoon I was standing in Miles's mother's kitchen with a paring knife and a pile of carrots.

Miles had invited me to soup.

He hadn't said it was a test.

His mother had said it for him, at the door, with one look.

She was a small gray-haired woman in an apron with a cooking spoon in her back pocket.

She had put the carrots in my hands before I took off my coat.

"Miles," she said, "go to the car and get the bread."

"The bread is on the counter."

"Then go and look at the car."

He looked at me.

I nodded, and he went, and the screen door clapped behind him.

His mother turned on the burner.

For a while there was only the sound of my knife on the board.

"You're the one who lied to him," she said.

I put the knife down.

"Yes, ma'am."

"For how long?"

"A week. Longer if you count what I knew before I met him."

"And why?"

I had practiced several answers on the drive.

I picked none of them.

"Because I needed a way into a circle of people who were stealing from my family," I said. "He was the only one in it who wasn't. I told myself that was a plan. I never told him it was one."
