Chapter 8: Two Credit Cards

Hallie knocked at seven with a bag of takeout and a bottle of wine.

She looked tired.

I let her in, and I asked her about the sedan before I had even taken the bag.

"It was you at the pharmacy lot," I said. "Across from the clinic."

She set the wine down on the counter very slowly.

"Yes."

"Why?"

"Because you went quiet this morning when I left, and I wanted to make sure you were all right." She looked at me straight. "I saw him come out of the building. I didn't want to walk into that."

"You could have come in."

"I don't do waiting rooms."

It was a good answer.

It was also close enough to the truth that I couldn't find the seam in it.

I told her about the envelope, the three thousand dollars and the lease, and the forty thousand views.

She listened with her hands wrapped around her glass.

"What did you tell him?"

"No."

"Good." Her voice was very low. "Don't ever take his money, Miles."

"I wasn't going to."

"I know. I just needed to hear it."

We ate at the kitchen table with the takeout cartons open between us.

I didn't mention the chill in my stomach when Trent had said gray jacket.

I told myself Brynn had told him, and Brynn talked.

After dinner the mail was still on the counter, where I had left it for three days.

I sorted it out of habit.

Bills, a clinic newsletter, a flyer for a pizza place.

At the bottom was a thick white envelope with my name on it.

It was from a bank I had never opened an account with.

I slid my thumb under the flap.

It was a credit card statement.

The card was in my name, at my address, and the balance was fourteen thousand three hundred dollars.
