Chapter 17: Father
On Monday morning, after a Sunday spent ignoring his roommate's messages, Do-hyun found his father on the economics building steps with a suitcase between his feet.
He had slept somewhere on the street.
He wore the same brown jacket he had worn the day he disappeared, and the collar was black with grime.
Do-hyun saw him from the gate and stopped.
Behind Do-hyun, forty steps back, a black sedan idled at the kerb with Beom-su at the wheel.
Woo-jin sat in the back seat.
He had asked to come to the gate.
Do-hyun had said yes to the gate and no to anything after, and Woo-jin had said, "Then I will watch from the car."
"Do-hyun!"
His father was on his feet.
He opened his arms, unshaven and smiling, and the smell of soju came across the gravel before he did.
"My boy! Look at you. Look how thin. You've been in the papers! My son, a model!"
Students had slowed on the path.
A girl in a yellow raincoat lifted her phone.
"Where have you been?" Do-hyun said.
"Hiding, Do-hyun. Hiding from those men. I couldn't take you with me, you see that, they'd have found us both."
