Chapter 8: The Back Door

"She asked for her tonight?" Jonah said. "It's six o'clock, Dale. Her session ended two hours ago."

"Dr. Quillan likes to be thorough." Dale Rusk rolled the mint across his teeth.

Through the window behind him Maren saw a black sedan idling at the curb, with a second man in the driver's seat.

"I'll bring her in myself," Jonah said. "You can follow me."

"I'll drive her. It's no trouble."

"She came here with me."

"I know." Dale smiled. "That's the part Dr. Quillan found interesting."

He took one step into the room and held out his hand to Maren, palm up.

"Miss Teague. Just a quick chat. You'll be home by nine."

Maren looked at the hand.

In the first life she had been home by nine for the first three months.

Jonah reached back without turning and closed his fingers around her gloved wrist.

"Run," he said, very quietly.

Then he kicked the nearest laundry cart straight into Dale's knees.

The cart was full of wet towels and weighed a good hundred pounds.

Dale folded over it with a grunt, and a spray of towels slid across the linoleum.

"Go!"

Jonah dragged her down the aisle between the dryers.

The old man in the plastic chair woke up and shouted something.

At the back of the room there was a steel door marked Employees Only. Jonah hit the bar with his shoulder and the door burst open into a wet alley that smelled of detergent.

Behind them Dale yelled for the driver.

They ran past a row of dumpsters and out into a parking lot.

A grey hatchback stood alone under a dead light. Jonah thumbed the lock.
