Chapter 15: The Boil

Tuomas took the sign down himself.

We got to the boathouse at ten on Sunday morning, and he went up to the door with a claw hammer and pulled the four nails one at a time.

He folded the paper in half and put it in his pocket.

Then he took the key I had given him back, and unlocked the door, and swung it wide.

"That's not your mother's door," I said.

"It's Eero's," said Tuomas.

By noon the shore had filled.

I had expected thirty people and a handful of the curious.

There were over two hundred people before the first hour was out.

The charge nurse came with a tray of pasties and a whole crew of nurses behind her.

The man from bed four, who had been out of the hospital for two weeks, came in his Sunday coat and shook my hand twice.

Paavo and his sister unloaded folding chairs from a truck.

My mother sat on a bench by the water with a blanket on her lap and Helmi on one side and Onni on the other.

The church circle came in a body.

They stood together in their good wool coats near the fire pit, with their handbags over their wrists.

At the center of them, in navy and pearls, stood Kaarina.
