I asked him properly on the first Saturday of December, in the boathouse, in front of the children.
The stove was lit, and the skiffs hung from the rafters, and snow blew against the round window in the loft.
Helmi had organized it.
She stood on an overturned bucket in her yellow boots and held a piece of cardboard with letters in three colors of marker.
Onni stood beside her and held the other end.
The sign said, WILL YOU MARRY OUR MAMA AND ALSO US.
Tuomas read it twice.
His hands went into his pockets and came out again.
"Sanna," he said.
"Don't talk. I rehearsed."
I got down on one knee on the cold planks.
It was ridiculous.
I had a speech in my head, and it left me the moment I looked at his face.
"Tuomas Ahola," I said. "Six years ago I walked out of a church vestibule, and you let me. I'm the one who's coming back. I'm asking you, this time, in front of witnesses, to marry me a second time."
My voice cracked.
"I'm not asking you to be sorry. You've done that. I'm asking you to be my husband, and the twins' uncle, and the one who shows up. For the rest of it."
