Chapter 15: Keir's POV

Keir's POV

The Brantleys' lawyer came up the hill at nine, in a grey overcoat and city shoes, with a leather case under his arm.

I let him in and gave him the chair by the stove.

At the door I had handed him the visitor form every guest on the ridge signs.

He had signed it without reading the second page.

The second page says the lodge is a set, and that the camera on the beam above his head is live to the archive.

"Mr. Halverson," he said. "I'll be brief."

"Please."

"Brantley Holdings is a sponsor, and sponsors have conduct clauses. Your relationship with a contestant is a breach."

He opened the case.

"We can litigate it," he said. "Or we can be sensible."

"What's sensible?"

"You disqualify Ms. Wyland tonight, for tampering with the vote servers. We have the evidence."

"You made the evidence."

He smiled, which was an answer.

"In return, Brantley Holdings drops the breach and renews the sponsorship for three seasons."

He took a folded paper from the case and laid it on the table between us.

"And this stays where it has been for six years."

I looked at the paper.

I knew the paragraph on the first page by heart. I knew the signature at the bottom, a shaky blue one I had once watched my father practice on a hospital tray.

I had never seen the second page of the settlement.

"The settlement," I said.

"Your father was a practical man."

"He was a frightened one."

"He cashed it, Mr. Halverson. I'd call that practical."

I made my hands shake, which was not hard.
