Chapter 18: The Open Wall

"The people who can see," I said.

Then I went inside and shut the door on him.

Through the window I watched him stand there for almost a minute.

He set the roses on the porch swing, very neatly, and walked back to his car.

The man across the street turned off his hose.

Dot came out of the kitchen, took the roses off the swing and dropped them headfirst into her compost bin.

"Grocery store," she said. "He couldn't even spring for a florist."

I didn't sleep much that night.

Shay slept on Dot's couch with her shoes on. Sawyer went back to his own apartment at eleven and texted once.

"I'll be in the back row. Good night, Frankie."

I read it about forty times.

The Abernathy Foundation's gallery was in an old brick warehouse near the river, with tall white walls and a concrete floor that made every heel sound.

At six o'clock on May fourteenth it was full.

Five finalists' walls ran down the long room, each with twelve prints and a little white card.

At the very end stood one more wall, bare, with a single line painted on it in black, in spiky handwriting I knew.
