Chapter 19: Eighteen
At eight forty-one in the morning, I walked into the lobby of Aldecoa Freight with gasoline foam still drying on my boots.
My hands were wrapped in white tape to the knuckle, and I had not changed my shirt.
I was eighteen years old.
My public defender had texted at seven that the judge had moved my hearing to two in the afternoon.
I had never been so glad for a court date to move.
Joaquin walked at my left in his gray coat.
On my right was the trust lawyer, gripping his briefcase with both arms and his glasses crooked from running.
Six security guards stood in a row in front of the elevators.
Someone had pinned my photograph to the front desk, and under it a note in black marker: DO NOT ADMIT.
"Miss," the biggest guard said. "You cannot go up."
"Today I am eighteen," I said.
"I have instructions."
"Then read them to the cameras."
I pointed over my shoulder.
Through the glass doors, the reporter in the plain coat stood on the sidewalk, her phone held up and her face tight with excitement.
Four more crews were setting up behind her.
The guard looked at the doors, and his jaw moved.
The trust lawyer cleared his throat and opened his briefcase on the front desk.
"Gentlemen," he said, in a high, trembling voice, "Pilar Aldecoa's trust releases forty percent of this company's voting shares to her granddaughter at nine o'clock on her eighteenth birthday, at the company's registered office, in person."
He took out a page.
"If anyone in this building prevents her from arriving, the shares vote against the person who prevented her. That is clause nine. I wrote it myself."
The guards looked at each other.
The biggest one stepped aside.
