Chapter 23: Papa's Hand
That night I walked back into the boardroom in the same taped wraps.
The twelve chairs were full, and the long table still smelled of coffee and sweat.
I did not sit at the head of it.
I stood behind the empty chair that had been Renata's.
"I am not going to run this company," I said.
Nobody moved.
"I fight for a living, and I would run it into a wall. My brother Joaquin spent four years as a ship's officer, and he knows every route we sail."
I put my hand on his shoulder.
"I vote my shares for Joaquin Aldecoa as chief executive."
The heavy man in the navy suit stood up first.
"Seconded," he said, "with pleasure."
The vote took four minutes.
Joaquin lowered himself into the chair at the head of the table, very slowly, and the board laughed kindly, and so did I.
"One thing," I said.
They went quiet.
"My shares stay mine. I will vote them when it matters. And no driver, no dockworker and no child in this city will ever be locked out of anything by this company again."
The woman with her hands on her mouth that morning began to clap.
Then they all did.
I walked out before it was over.
At nine that night I sat beside a hospital bed in the county ward.
My father lay propped on three pillows in a clean gown.
Someone had shaved him, and the left side of his face looked a little less heavy than it had.
A police officer sat on a stool outside the door, and Beto's nephew sat on another stool beside him, glaring at the officer for no reason.
