Chapter 17: Floor Ten

The law says a party goes down with four.

I ran out of the House and down the hill with the old porter and the youngest healer behind me.

Joris was standing at the top of the Mouth with his sword on his back and a coil of rope over his shoulder.

"I heard," he said. "Iron and Silver stop at nine. You need a Gold."

"You'd be going down after him."

"I'm going down after your brother," he said. "I've been told to stand still once on these steps. I didn't like it."

That made four.

We met them on the stair between the ninth floor and the tenth.

Coppens came up out of the dark first, with his hand on his chest and a lamp in his glove.

The Gold with the iron beard and the Gold with the shaved head came behind him.

There were three of them.

Coppens stopped two steps below me and looked up.

He didn't have a scratch on him.

"Where is he?" I said.

"The boy went forward against my order," Coppens said. "The warden had him before we could reach him."
