Chapter 12: I Found the Moon

[Hello, Sabine,] Opal said again. [I know you can hear me. Everyone felt the Moon move. Dad's furious.]

I lay on the warm slab with Eli's weight beside me and his heartbeat in my head.

Then I did what he had taught me.

I imagined a door and put my hand flat on it.

"Don't answer," Eli said, very low. "Not yet."

[Come home, Bee,] Opal said, in her kindest voice. [Whatever he's told you, whatever you think you saw. We can fix this. Nobody has to be hurt. Just walk back and say you got lost.]

I almost laughed.

It was the voice that had told me for fifteen years that I was loved.

I shut the door.

The link dimmed to a murmur.

"She's frightened," I said.

"She should be."

"She'll burn this place if she can."

Eli sat up and unpinned the silver crescent from his collar, the one she had pinned there herself.

He pressed it into a small notch at the base of the black slab, and a thin line of light ran around the stones.

"The Council's ward," he said. "Nothing that isn't invited can cross it until moonrise tomorrow. She'll find a wall of water she can't wade."

"And tomorrow?"

"Tomorrow is yours." He took my hand. "Walk in at moonrise, Sabine. Don't sneak and don't ask permission. Walk straight into that quarry in front of every pack and tell them what you are."

"They'll call me a liar."

"The Council's envoy will be there. She'll know the light."

I looked at the seven stones, calm and grey, and I thought of my mother.
