Chapter 13: What the Link Says Now

The envoy rose slowly, and gravel clung to her grey cloak.

"A Moon-Chosen is a claim until it is proven," she said. "I will not bow twice on a woman's word alone."

Three hundred people breathed out together.

"There are three tests," she went on. "The light on the stones, witnessed. The silver in the eyes. And the ear."

"What is the ear?" my father asked. His voice was thin.

"You know what it is, Alpha Corwin. You have known for twenty-five years."

He said nothing.

Eli lifted two fingers, and two wardens in grey stepped out of the trees behind us.

They were a man and a woman, both older than Eli, both with the crescent pin on their collars.

"We held the ridge above Weeping Bog on Friday night," the woman said. "At moonrise the seven stones lit white from the base to the top. The light stood in the air until the moon cleared the trees."

"I saw it from the north fence," the man said. "The beam lit the whole bog."

"Wardens answer to him," my father said, pointing at Eli. His hand shook. "To the man who has been in my daughter's bed."

Every head turned to me.

I did not lower my eyes.

"Yes," I said. "He has."

A stir went through the pack women, and my father's mouth fell open.

"I walked to his cabin myself," I said. "Nobody led me, nobody drugged me, and nobody tricked me. I went there because I had heard you all in the link, and I wanted someone who would tell me the truth."
