Chapter 24: The Seat She Chose
I gave the sentences at noon, in the gravel pit where it had all begun.
The envoy sat beside me, and she said nothing.
"The Chosen sets the penalty," she had told me that morning. "The Council will carry it out."
I stood up beside my mother's silver bowl, the one I had found on the altar, with a list in my head that I had written and rewritten for four nights.
Beau went first.
They brought him from the Council tents in plain clothes, with a grey scar where the bite had been and his eyes on the ground.
"Beau Tennant," I said. "You swore on the Moon to wait for me at the true stones, and you stood at a false one. You helped lock me out of my own family's link. You wanted my seat through my name."
"Sabine." His voice was hoarse. "I loved you."
"You loved the seat."
He had no answer.
"You are exiled from every pack in the Council's lands. You may not take another mate by bite. If you cross a line without leave, the wardens will walk you back to it."
He nodded once, and the wardens led him out through the trees.
He did not look back.
Gray and Emmett were next.
They stood side by side in front of the bench, because they always had.
"You set the snare," I said to Gray. "You laughed at the hunt," I said to Emmett. "You both knew, and you both kept quiet while I poured out a cup of tea every week."
"Yes," Gray said.
"Three years of service on the Council's line crews. You'll build wards for the packs the Council forgot. You'll have no vote in the Corwin pack until the three years are done, and no seat at my table."
Emmett swallowed. "And after?"
"After, you may ask me again."
Gray put his big hand over his mouth, and his shoulders came down.
