Chapter 21: Tear It Up
The contract tore with a sound like a zipper.
Jasper held one end, and I held the other.
We pulled.
The paper split down the middle, through the line that said one year, through the line I had underlined twice, through the clause about separate bedrooms.
I tore the halves again.
And again.
He watched my hands the whole time.
"That was thirty days' notice each," he said.
"You've used up your notice."
"I never gave any."
"Neither did I."
I dropped the pieces in the wastebasket and he lit the corner of one with a desk lighter, because I asked him to.
It burned with a little blue flame.
We stood there like two people at a very small bonfire.
"I need to say one more thing," I said. "Since we're doing it in order."
"Say it."
"I was angry at you for two years of things you did without asking. I'm still a little angry. I think I'll be a little angry on and off for months."
"That's fair."
"But I'm not leaving."
His whole body let go.
I saw it.
He put his hand over his eyes and stood like that for three breaths.
"Roz," he said, behind his hand. "I've been waiting to hear that since the elevator."
"Then you've heard it."
He pulled me against his chest and I let him.
We stood by the wastebasket until the flame went out.
That afternoon I sat at the kitchen island with a pad and called a woman in the Garment District who had made a wedding dress for my grandmother.
"Size eighteen," I told her. "Hips and bust as measured. No corset. I want it to move."
"For when?"
"Six weeks."
"Six weeks!"
"I'm told it can be done for a price."
